Assassin's Creed Unity Preview (with 12 images): Ushering a New Era of Multiplayer Gaming

Assassin's Creed Unity

Assassin's Creed Unity portrays the picture of the beautiful city of Paris in the midst of the French revolution. The game's hero is Arno a native Frenchman on a quest of redemption. The city looks amazing with its ancient structures and lively mob. The graphics is gorgeous to say the least. It is amazingly detailed.

The beautifully done interiors of the buildings would keep you even more awestruck. The inclusion of some famous real world structures adds to the game's settings.

Before talking about gameplay one thing needs to be made clear. That is ACU is meant only for current generation consoles (PlayStation 4, Xbox One and of course the 'immortal' PC.) As a result the publishers are targeting a 60 fps at 1080p. How much of that goal they will be able to achieve is a pretty valid question, because the E3 gameplays did seem (to me) to lag a bit.

Assassin's Creed has added some new features to this game:

Parkour Down

In the earlier games it was mandatory for the player to look for a haystack to reach the ground level from high above. This was pretty tiresome and quite surprising to think that an assassin who knows how to climb scaringly tall buildings was helpless without a haystack (or couple of guards to air assassinate) when it came to descending. However with the countless sharing of the meme showing an assassin performing a leap of faith getting trolled when someone decided to move the haystack, Ubisoft has finally got it right and introduced the Parkour Down concept where you can plan your decent and navigate to exactly the place you want to go completely eliminating the necessity of other elements for such executions.

High Ground

Since Assassins spend a lot of time on the rooftops the addition of the new feature called High Ground enables the player to quickly glance at the countless gameplay opportunities surrounding the player.

Talking of countless gameplay opportunities, one cannot help but notice the natural behavior of the citizens as they carry on with their day to day life like stealing, fighting, arguing over food etc. We can take part or rather interfere in these fights. For example the above picture shows a thief running away with a woman's purse. On the right side there is a crowd curiously looking inside the building. On entering the building we can add a 'mystery mission' to our quest log.

Dedicated Stealth Mode

For the first time in Assassin's Creed, there is a dedicated stealth mode that can be triggered at the press of the button. This allows Arno to maintain a cover to cover approach. However Ubisoft has not repeated the mistake that it made in Watch Dogs, where one had to toggle between crouch and cover to achieve the desired effect. One can simply change the position by moving in the desired direction unlike in Watch Dogs where one had to point at the next place and press a key or a button to take cover at that location. Moreover there is this usual feature where Arno leaves a trail that can be considered to be the place where the enemy expects him to be. That simplifies things like avoiding line of sight and quick changing of cover.

Co-op

The new four player co-op in Assassin's Creed is quite interesting. Every player in his own game plays as Arno. That means you can expect some other assassin in your game who in his game is playing as Arno.

The Combat

The combat is a little different from the previous Assassin's Creed games. Here one needs to wisely use the available tools, moves and execute parry, dodge, tackle and heavy attack.

One can build on Arno's character in his own way by upgrading in the skills tree.

The Eagle Pulse, that will also need to be upgraded, will help plan the attack.

Phantom Blade

One of the most prominent additions in the game is the new Assassin-signature-weapon Phantom Blade.
The Phantom Blade uses the same mechanism as that of a crossbow to fire a silent projectile a great distance, while still serving the same role as the Hidden Blade as in previous Assassin's Creed games.

So far all I can say is that though I am not head over heals for this new phantom blade, but I do wish to see how this new co-op finally pours juice into the gameplay. The Assassin's Creed Series has always used significant periods of history as its plot, and that is probably what makes each of the games so absorbing. What bothers me is the fact that it might humiliate my rigs. Apart from that there is much to be expected from this game. So let's wait till it releases. I don't expect to be disappointed.
